To recap: the Fabric of the Nation project started
as a simple call to Singaporeans to sew a piece of patchwork to reflect
their thoughts and feelings about how we have navigated the challenges
of recent years. It attracted some 15,000 patchwork pieces, which
were sewn into 60 panels and are currently on public display at the
HDB Hub till 31 December 2006.
Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth
and Sports, said, The Fabric of the Nation is a symbol of the
unity and resilience of Singaporeans in the face of adversity. It
showed us that together, we can, and will overcome challenges put
in our way.
The themes of social cohesiveness and national resilience make
the Fabric of the Nation an ideal tapestry from which to design a
stamp issue that commemorates Singapores 40th birthday,
he added.
The stamp issue features a colourful and captivating selection of
personalised patchwork designs reflecting each contributors
sentiments about their love for Singapore.
The stamp designs came in two sheetlets of 20 1st local stamps each,
either in gummed back or self-adhesives versions. Collectors could
also pick up a unique Miniature sheet ($1) which featured all the
40 patchwork stamp designs in one single stamp.
In addition, to commemorate 40 years of nation building, a special
uncut Collectors sheet printed with 4 miniature sheets was also
available in a specially designed folder. The stamps were made available
for public sale on 9 Aug 2005. |
